Set up just over 12 years ago, netsoc (the Trinity College Internet Society), is one of the largest societies in college. Each year the committee run a mish-mash of events, ranging from tech-talks through to week long ski trips. As well as events, we run tutorials on various topics throughout term, provide Unix shell accounts to members, and access to our library, among other services.
Webpages: Netsoc gives you a place to park your website. For free. We'll teach you everything you need to know about making websites, making graphics for the web, animation and more.
Spoon: Spoon is the newest Netsoc server, and is dead sexy. It's a dual processor Poweredge 1800 from Dell, with 4 gigs of ram. Its just cool.
Cluster: We were recently given computers by the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in tcd and have set up a cluster, which our members can use. It consists of 32 sparcs and a bunch of networking equipment. If you want anything computed, this is the way to go. It appeared in "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" under the name "Deep Thought," and is responsible for keeping our room warm during the winter.
Matrix:
Matrix is was the most powerful computer in TCD, and it's just
for Netsoc members. (It's a dual processor E450 with 2GB RAM and
20*9.1GB SCSI disks running Solaris 8). If that sounds scary, it's because
it is. This is one very, very powerful machine.
Support: Weekly workshops and support. Email support@netsoc.tcd.ie, and if we can't answer your question, we know someone who can.
Parties: There's Intervarsity parties (with the other Netsocs in DCU, UCD, etc), party-with-other-society parties (previously LGB, Fortean, DUCSS), Rag Week parties, and party-for-no-reason parties. Every year we give out thousands of euro of free drink. What do Netsoc members pay? Nothing!
Trips: Trips abroad in the past have included a cheap weekend in London, and a trip to Bletchley Park (home of s3kr1t spy cryptography) and an annual Ski Trip.
Competitions: Table quizzes, web design competitions, Playstation tournaments, Netsoc offers the best in competition for the Monica in everyone
Talks: Guests we've had include former ESAT head Denis O'Brien, computer games legend Peter Molyneux (maker of Black & White), and the world's first human cyborg Professor Kevin Warwick.
Room: The Netsoc Room is in Goldsmith Hall, where you can log in in peace, have a cup of coffee, use the DVD/CD burner and hide from your lectures. Not that we recommend that, of course.
Library: The Netsoc Library has got technical books, fiction, and a huge archive of magazines.
Lollipops: There are free lollipops waiting for you on the Netsoc stand right now (sorry, freshers' week only). What are you waiting for? Lollipops, people. Lollipops.
We won TCD Society of the Year and Best Website in 2000.
We're always looking to get new members signed up. The membership fee is a miserable €1 and the easiest time to join is during freshers' week (the first week in october). After that, you can join at most talks, at our room or even online.
