Week of Netsoc Goodness

Monday 3 November 2003

Fun Every Day

Today marks the beginning of the official “Week of Goodness” from your
friends at Netsoc. We are proud to announce that with great effort
and ingenuity, we have managed to cram not one, not two but SIX
exciting events into a single week!

It all begins on Monday the 3rd, when we at Netsoc will hold an Emergency
General Meeting to elect two lucky winners to two council
positions which have sadly become vacant. If you’d like to come along,
here are the details.

On Tuesday it’s all hands on deck for the first Netsoc tutorial, where we
will be helping everyone who feels they need it to learn how to
log in to matrix and do all the wonderful things they keep hearing about.
The tutorial is a must for all
new members who want to get the most out of the best society in the
college.

Immediately following the tutorial will be the first talk of the session,
with Fred “Piro” Gallagher, the famed creator of internatonally acclaimed
webcomic Megatokyo will be joining
us in college for his first ever talk in Ireland. Lots more details are
available here.

On Wednesday we have our second talk of the week, this time by famed internet
security guru Simple Nomad, who
is in Ireland to speak at the famous
HiverCon security conference
. Yet another unmissable talk arranged for
you by the good folks at Netsoc.

Thursday sees the first ever Netsoc
Netris Tournament
, with players from all over the college competing for
fame, glory and whatever prizes we manage to scrounge together. Remember to
let Villiros know if you want to get involved though.

And in our grand finale, bringing a suitable close to a wonderful week, Netsoc
have arranged for a large number of student price tickets to the 8:30 p.m.
showing of Matrix: Revolutions
showing at the UGC on Parnell Street. Please book in advance, and be
part of the huge ground of students which will descend upon the cinema for
the final part of one of the most popular film trilogies since Star Wars
(which was awful).

Come, join us, and know the joy of the Netsoc Week of Goodness (name chosen by a
Russian, Netsoc accepts no responcibility for silly sounding names.

Following the success of HiverCon 2002, the conference has positioned itself
as an unmissable event on the security calendar. The only european centric
conference of its type, focus is kept on deep level security knowledge.
Striving to teach an understanding of the hacker mentality using open and
unbiased discussion of the current threats and the threats that have not
yet been realised.

The conference organisers have generously made a limited number of student tickets
available to full-time Irish university students, which can only be
booked on-line on a first
come first served basis. The student price of €50 (normal ticket price
€1,400) should be paid at the registration desk on the first morning
of the conference. Those registering are required to have a student card with them.
