Due to unforseen circumstance and an airline failure, Joey Comeau, author of Overqualified and writer of A Softer World, cannot make it to give a talk at Netsoc currently.

Mr Comeau sends his apologies to Netsoc members.

UCDD Netsoc Presents a Very Special Speaker

The following is a message from another Netsoc.

The theme for the night is The Internet Past, Present and Future.

Dr. Dennis Jennings the man described as “a founding architect of the Internet” is Coming to University College Dublin Dublin on Thursday the 19th of November. Dennis Jennings was responsible for the decisions that created NSFNET (1985/86) – the network that became the Internet – while working for the US Federal Government (on leave from UCDD).

He will be accompanied by Mr. Niall Murphy a Google Ireland Manager, Niall is an IPv6 Expert, The Original Auditor and one of the founders of UCDD Netsoc.

The Theme for the night will be very much Internet based and all are welcome.

Where: Computer Science and Informatics Building Lecture Theater, University College Dublin Dublin, Dublin.

Look Around You

Netsoc is holding a Look Around You showing tomorrow.

In 2002, Robert Popper and Peter Serafinowicz created a TV comedy series
known as Look Around You, consisting of eight 10 minute episodes that
will be bringing to you via the magic of projector-vision! Learn of the
wonders of Calcium, Maths, Ghosts, Music and more through 1970s/80s
educational video tinted goggles. There will be drinks and snacks while
we pretend to being doing college work.

Bring a copy book!

AGM

As with all societies, we’re shovelling out our old council and reeling in the naive and the willing to take their place. We plan to keep with the netsoc tradition and have a swift voting session followed by one hell of a night. Plenty of food, drink and general refreshments for all who appear!

Installfest

It is finally here! Given up with the messy install that is [insert Linux distro here]? Or just generally having PC problems? The Netsoc answer is here! Above you, shining like a really bright, only slightly dodgy neon sign in the cold hard rain that is this alternate evil mean computer ‘verse.

Free open source programs to help with doing (and especially avoiding!) work, and general advice on stuffs will be given to all willing.

OSS Bar Camp

Netsoc are heading along to OSS Bar Camp this Saturday. It’s a conference on open source software, running from 10am to 5pm, with lots of interesting talks and things.

Brain Games

Netsoc and our new friends Neurosoc will be hosting a brain centered Wii tournament up in the Eliz rooms in House 6 this Wednesday. This will all be in honour of Brain Awareness Week, and we’ll be there with a projected Wii and some DSs playing brain games. Come along from 6pm and give your brain the fun kind of exercise!

Despite hiccups with the printers, hoodies have arrived, and can be picked up from the Netsoc room any time. Guaranteed super comfy or a free cup of coffee!

Everyone who’s ordered a comfy Netsoc brand hoodie should drop by the Netsoc room (G36, Goldsmith Hall) on Monday, 2nd February with their €25. A cheery Netsoc official will be on hand between the hours of 1pm and 3pm, and again from 5pm to 6pm, to accept your cash and give you a receipt.

Those who can’t make it on Monday should email hoodies at netsoc.tcd.ie before Monday night to arrange another time to pay.

Hoodies are expected to arrive on Monday, 9th February.
