This is a compilation of Open Source Software Netsoc recommends for Trinity College Students to use throughout the course of the College year. This software can all be freely downloaded there is something here for just about everyone.
The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is an image manipulation program used to process digital graphics and photographs. The gimp boasts a huge range of features easily matching that of Adobe's Photoshop program (but The Gimp is free...). Dia is a diagram creation tool which supports UML modeling. Inkscape is a vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw
Procrastination is something all Netsoc members excel at and as such, we naturally had to include a few free games. Armagetron is a 3D game that attempts to emulate and expand on the light cycle sequence from the movie Tron. Nethack is a 'classic' computer game that tends to make us all nostalgic. Teeworlds is basically 'real time worms' but better and more addictive. Xmoto is a 2D motorcross platform game.
Firefox is a free open source web browser which can be used instead of Internet Explorer. Putty is a telnet and SSH client which, among other things, allows Netsoc members to log onto our servers and avail of soem of our services like 'chat', games and webhosting. WinSCP is a an Open source, freeware SFTP, FTP and SCP client. Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once.
Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats. It will play almost any video or audio file you can throw at it.
Pretty much all students have to hand type up assignments at some point or another during the college year, but that does not mean you should have to pay for Microsoft Office. AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word while Open Office is free, fully functional office suite with presentation (powerpoint) and spreadsheet (excel) programs. It can even save and open documents in Microsoft Office formats (.doc).
Those small essential programs. 7Zip is a file Archiver which can be used to compress and uncompress files. Stellarium... well, Stellarium is free planetarium software that is just cool and pretty.
For all those budding (and experienced) programmers out there. Notepad++ is a free, feature rich text editor that supports syntax highlighting for a huge variety of programming and scripting languages. Vim is a highly configurable text editor built to enable efficient text editing. Python is a remarkably powerful dynamic programming language and Dive into Python is a free e-book to help you learn it.
