Glossary
Here for all the little definitiony bits of things that might be new to you. or less than new, but this is the definition that is to be used in this context.
APIs?
APIs? are Application Program Interfaces. They are a set of rules that define how computer languages interact with oneanother.
Dissertation
This is the completed article that will be produced at the end of my project. Referred to here as the WriteUp.
Fidelity
Fidelity is a measure of how accurate a sampling of sound is.
PDF is a high quality, portable document format developed by Adobe.
Pitch Pipes
Pitch pipes are simple tuning aids that play a set of frequencies which give a musician a reference by which to tune his instrument.
Rack Mounted
Similar to server racks, high-end audio equipment is available in modules which fit into racks for ease of transport and conservation of space on a crowded stage or in a small studio environment.
Real Time
In computing terms, a real time program is one that is guaranteed to complete a task in a set time. In this case, to do real time tuning, the tuner will have to sample the sound and then process it within a given length of time. Given the limited amount of processing power on hand in a mobile phone, it remains to be seen that this can be done.
Tuner
A tuner is a device that allows accurate callibration (or intonation) and tuning of a musical instrument. There are many different types of tuner available, with features and accuracy generally depending on price.
XLR
A very robust, three-pin locking connector widely used in professional audio; also called a Cannon connector after one of its most prominent original manufacturers. In analog applications, particularly in some high-end consumer audio equipment, XLR connectors are used with balanced lines for optimal interference rejection. The pins in an XLR connector usually "point" in the direction of signal flow.[1]
