Tourist trip to camp 1 (John Gilbert, Les Brown, Aisling Mathews, Katie Walsh, Ronan O Cealachain, Aileen Connor).
Tuesday August 1st.
Approximately 9hours.
Slow paced trip to camp 1, where we setup a hot point for Irish contingent to camp just up the great rubble heap from camp 1.
Aisling and Katie remained there for the night, while the remainder of the group exited the cave.
Water levels were incredibly low (there was no river at the bottom of Aldos!), and I got to camp 1 with dry feet.
Discovered my Platypus had a leak. Very enjoyable trip.
-
Bottoming trip. (John Gilbert, Ronan O Cealachain, Les Brown, Aileen Connor).
Thursday 3rd August.
Approximately 38hours.
Continuing past camp 1 to the hall of the thirteen after a brief stop for food, we discovered all the gour pools had dried out. It was an
incredible sight, albeit a little disappointing compared to that observed two years earlier. We continued down
to the canals, where we discovered we needed to climb! up to the traverse lines -- the water was indeed
low. I managed to get through the canals with dry feet, and at that point determined I would bottom the cave.
My initial plan for this trip was to get as far as the canals, and probably turn back there given my memories
of discomfort and cold from my previous berger bottoming trip. I got wet up to the waist at that horrible
flowstone obstruction in the cascades, which themselves were very timid compared to my memory of them from
the previous berger expedition. The last time I was there, I seriously considered turning back. This time,
no such thought crossed my mind. We continued at a jolly pace to the bottom of the grand canyon, where
we temporarily sat in our survival bags waiting for a group coming up from the bottom to finish a section
of pitch climbing before we continued on down into the cave. Having reached the bottom of the houricane
pitch I pushed on with Ronan to the start of the canals after the 1000m inlet, where some awquard traversing
resulted in my getting thouroughly drenched. With the aim of having no reason to return to the berger,
I set off for the pseudo siphon by myself -- Ronan refusing to get his feet wet after seeing my spectacular
dowsing. I pottered down for a while until I reached a cascade into a pool of water with no obvious way down.
I decided that was obviously the siphon (there were a few short bits of tat tied off and broken, which i
presumed were the start of dive lines broken now by flood water), only to be told later by Pete of the YSS
that you could climb up and traverse down and continue for another 100m. Oh well. Les and Aileen caught me at
that point, and I then turned back ready for the ascent. After feeling a little daunted, I finally got going
at a happy pace and myself and Ronan set off. Les caught us at the bottom of the grand canyon, where he
waited for Aileen. Myself and Ronan pushed on then and at a steady pace (my speed, not Ronans since he had
trained for the trip!) eventually got back to the camp site just in time to radio the surface with our status.
We encountered a group that were setting up camp above vestiere (Pete, Pete, Ingrid) and another at the
UK campsite at camp 1. After 8 hours sleep, we all 4 (for Les and Aileen soon arrived at the camp site) awoke
at 11am in the morning. We were unsuccessful in using the radio to contact the surface (! still no idea what
went wrong there), but the other two groups had exited the cave before us. The water in the cave had risen
substantially, and when myself and Les arrived at the bottom of the little general it was obvious the weather
outside had taken a real turn for the worse. Lake Cadeaux had appeared overnight, as had a second lake at the
junction with Petzl galery which prooved awquard to traverse about. Les checked Aldos pitch and discovered it
was tanking. At that point we decided we would have to settle in for a long sit out, and soon Ronan and Aileen
arrived. We all stripped down and got into sleeping bags and our survival bags, and hibernated. At some point,
about 3hours or so in, Les decided he was feeling energetic and set off for camp 1, with the aim of bringing up
a few supplies for the sit out (food etc. which we had abanondend earlier that day). He contacted the surface,
but on trying to return to us discovered that it would be dangerous to do so as the water had risen again.
The bottom of Aldos (just outside, in the starless river) was now like sitting in a heavy rain shower. Not the nice
place It initially seemed to be. Cold, wet and tired I was unable to sleep, although ronan was out for the count
and so was Aileen (she keeled over ontop of me and remained there for the remainder of our 10hours of sitting out).
Eventuially the rain seemed to clear and Ronan braved his wet clothes to go check the pitch. It was wet, but
passable. We dressed, determined none of us were in a suitable state to go looking for Les, and exited the cave
hoping he had made contact with the surface. We had not heard from him for over 7hours, and were slightly anxious
that he were OK. When we got out, he had indeed made contact, and the girls (Aisling and Katie) had nice hot food
for us. Derry and Alex provided dry wam clothes and sleeping bags, and we hopped into the tent to warm up.
Shortly after becoming warm andresting, (about an hour), les arrived and was eager to set off for autrans
to go to bed. We got back to the car, changed, and set off. The shop had just opened at about 6am when wearrived
and all stocked up on food. Back at the campsite an extended shower was had by all 4 of us before going to
bed. What a trip :). It was excellent fun, we were well equiped at all times, and despite being cold at the
aldos sit out the entire experience was nowhere near as bad as my memories of the preivious bottoming trip I
had made to the berger.
-
Derig trip. (John Gilbert, Ronan O Cealachain, Aisling Mathews, John Moore, YSS guy (cant remember name)).
Tuesday 8th August.
Approximately 9hours.
Myself, Ronan and Aisling got down to Vestiere. The others collected bags to sherpa out to the exit at Camp1 and
set off while we deriged the cave from vestiere back to camp 1. I did vestiere and the calcice slopes, While
ronan did the great cascade and balcony pitch. We broke the irish hot point, and with Erik the dutch caving
machine set off for the exit. Neither myself nor Ronan could keep pace with him for long :). Nice trip,
although quite tiring. Next expedition I will train. Seriously, I will!

Gouffre Berger (France): 20th - 30th August 2004 (Irish student expedition)
- First trip: Berger :: John, Derry, Steph, Larry. Double rigged entrace pitches. Derry & Steph turned back before Aldos, Myself and Larry continued. I was ill at camp 1 (possibly my drinking water got messed up?), and after an hours kip in my bivy bag was woken by some french guys on their way out from a the bottoming rigging trip. I started to make my way out, thinking larry would promptly follow but the arrival of Eoghan, Donal and Enda gave him an opportunity to delay for a while longer (i was sitting 1/2 way up the grand ebolis). Once larry made a move we managed to do a loop and end up back at the bottom of the grand ebolis. Larry decided to camp there for the night. I made my way out with a french guy (matthew) and was just about able to keep up with him. He zoomed on out once we got as far as the bottom of aldos. I was utterly wrecked, and Enda + co. caught up with me at gontards, so the remainder of my trip out was with some company (very much appreciated). Ive some vauge memory of letting another french guy pass me at gontards, giving me an opportunity for an extended rest (of which many were taken mid-rope-ascent!). On the way into the trip, rennauts (?spelling) girlfriend was VERY unhappy at the top of cairn pitch - even with my dodgey french i could make hat much out from my perch at the top of the holiday series, so i dropped down and attempted to reassure her as we got her off the pitch head. Derry tells me she was saying hail marys in french as she pclimbed ruiz and the entrance pitch - and i heard a lot of 'putan' comments, which im convinced must be some sort of swear!
- Second trip: dent de crolles :: Through trip from tru de glaz to guillers mort. Very fun. Very enjoyable. VERY COLD! Very gw:-)
- Via ferrata in Grenoble
- Second trip: Berger :: John, Les, Steve, Steve, Enda, Donal, Eoin (Jesus). Bottoming trip. All went to plan thankfully! As far as the canalls all was fine. The ropes in teh canalls made me thankfull that im light .. i do wonder how strong 6 pieces of core are, that have been in situe for probably several years. The cascades freaked me out a good bit, and i thought of turning back a few times. When we hit the top of hurricane Les turned back, and the noise was deafening (much worse than before), although when i looked at the pitch it didnt seem almost as bad as the grand cascade, so i went down it. At the bottom i took a leek and started straight back up to try and catch Les, id made the bottom of the pitches and id leave the sump viewing for another year :-) . The slog out was painfull. Not physically, as the exit from the first trip had been, but mentally (although initially i had little energy and motivation to derig), and was got quite cold at camp2, so staretd to leave. The cascades werent as bad on the way out as i immagined them, and the canalls only took a short while to get through -- much more enjoyable when youre not stuck in water up to your chest waiting for steve to move along :-) When we got the camp1 we went for a sleep - dry clothes and a sleeping bag from duncans kit bag. The timing was such that we would arrive out the next morning at about 11 o clock - with nice sun to enjoy. Dragging out three bags wasnt as bad as i had thought (mind i didnt end up with any heay stuff - just bulky things), and for the most part kept pace well with Les. The second part of the meanders killed me - Although i was so close to the entrance i really didnt mind at all. I ran into Duncan in them, and wanted to punch him for bouncing with such visible energy infront of me - although it was nice to run into a face having lost contact with les probably about 40mins before. Finally made it out at 12 o clock to the lovely sun, where Denise made tea and pampered us. A day of lounging in the sun before wandering out to the cars with _very_ sore feet.
