How to use this applet:

To use the inequality solver fill in the text boxes with the coefficient of x, any constant you wish, and then what the inequality is compared to. The various inequality symbols may be selected from a drop down menu. When you have constructed the desired equation press "Solve" and the solution will appear. To graph an inequality, fill in the coefficient of X and a constant. Select the inequality symbol from the drop down menu and press "Plot". The blue area produced shows which values of x and y satisfy the equation.

Notes on the maths used in the applet:

An expression such as 3x - 7 <= 8 is similar to the equation 3x - 7 = 8. However, in this we are looking for all possible numbers which, when we multiply them by 3 and subtract 7, you get an answer less than or equal to 8. Unlike, 3x - 7 = 8 which has only one solution, there are an infinite number of answers which this is true for. So our answer is not a single number, but a range of numbers. We solve them just like simple equations: what you do to one side, you must do to the other. One important difference though is that when you divide or multiply both sides by a negative number you must flip the inequality sign.
