Quotient Rule - By Suzanne Monnelly
How to use this applet:On the first page of the applet The user is required to enter the coefficients of the u and v values as well as their powers. They then click on the submit buttons to receive back the values of du/dx and dv/dx.If they then click on the "Explain" button, this will bring them to another panel where the calculation of these values is explained, and the formula for normal differentiation shown. From this panel the user can return to the previous panel using the "back" button,or they can proceed to the panel which explains how to use these calculations in the quotient rule.If they are yo choose the later, the diferential of the u/v value entered by the user at the beginning of the applet is calculated and displayed.A definition of the rule is also displayed on this panel.if the user wishes to do another sum they may click on the "Another Sum" button, which will bring them back to where they began.Notes on the maths used in the applet:On the first panel the user enters the coefficients and powers of a u/v expression. These are used to calculate du/dx and dv/dx using the formula d/dx ax^n = nax^n-1.These results are then displayed to the user.On the next panel, the user can click on a button to calculate the differential of the expression as a whole. To do so the values of du/dx and dv/dx are subbed into the quotient rule formula as well as the values entered by the user in the beginning. The formula for the quotient rule is d/dx u/v =( v(du/dx) - u(dv/dx))/v*v.The answer is displayed on the final panel.Other useful information: Microsoft internet explorer may be needed for the warning boxes to work.
