Finally, an update!
Well, I’ve been lazy and haven’t updated the site in a while. Although I’m updating it now, I’m still gonna be lazy and just copy and paste in Yan’s recent long and informative email. More details on everything he’s mentioned here to come very soon!
“Hey everyone!
Here is a proper long email to let you all know what we’re up to.
First of all, our highly exciting news that I mentioned earlier is that Bomb The Music Industry! a hugely fun ska-punk band from New York are giving a talk and playing a gig for us on Monday the second of February. The talk will be in Regent’s House (a very cool room above Front Arch), and the gig will be in Eamonn Doran’s. Bored With Cereal will be playing too, and we’re looking for at least one other band. Is anyone out there in a a band that they think would work well for this kind of gig? Let us know!
Bomb The Music Industry! is an uber-DIY band centred on Jeff Rosenstock. They/he make all their albums available for free (or a suggested donation of $5) on their website, http://www.bombthemusicindustry.com. So we were very interested in seeing what Jeff might have to say about why he does that, why he Does It Himself in general, and maybe a little about what he thinks the future of the music industry is, with the influence of the internet. So, even if you don’t like them, it should be an interesting guest lecture! If nothing else, it will definitely be 100% more punx than anything the Hist or the Phil are going to do. Ever.
Also, as far as I know, Jeff encourages audience members to bring along instruments and play too, but I’m not sure exactly how that works, I’ll have to check.
In other news, partly inspired by all the talking about Bomb The Music Industry! we’ve been doing, I’ve made a thread on the forums about free music you can legally get on the internet. As well as BTMI! there’s some awesome stuff I know of already there (like Girl Talk, Defiance Ohio, Explosions In The Sky and more) and maybe by the time you read this some other people will have added some. So check it out if you want to get some music for free (or sometimes a suggested donation), or if you know of some you’d like to share with others! Here is a link to the thread: http://durns.myfreeforum.org/sutra14241.php#14241
DURNS’s rehearsal space is available again, there are two slots every Monday, from 7:00 to 8:30 and from 8:30 to 10:00 (pm, of course). The first slot is booked, and we promised the second to someone but we can’t remember who (we’ll probably take your word for it if it’s you!), but there will be many more Monday nights throughout the year, so get in touch if you’d like to use it!
Finally, between now and the BTMI! gig, we have a few events we are planning:
Next Week: A screening of a concert film by The Pixies, preceded by (or, if you will, opened for by) a short tour diary by Los Campesinos!. (There are a lot of bands with punctuation in their names in this email. Even Defiance Ohio should have been Defiance, Ohio, but that makes lists confusing)
The Week After: CD swap in the Eliz rooms, House 6. Bring along old CDs you don’t want and swap them for better ones that misguided people didn’t like!
And as will hopefully become usual, the room will be open on Thursday from 6pm for hanging out, listening to music and possibly jamming.
Hopefully see a lot of you at the various events!
Yan
ps Jamie is booking rooms for the film and the CD swap tomorrow, we’ll let you know the days/times then. Also, we will let you know what the price for the BTMI! gig will be soon”
