Recent downtime

Posted by:Netsoc Posted on:Jun 28,2011

On the 27th of June, at 10:07 AM, there was a brief power outage across College, which caused our servers cube, spoon and matrix to be shut down without warning.

Power was restored to the server room some time before 12 o’clock, with spoon and cube coming back to life shortly afterwards. Our admin team restarted the services which run on those servers, and they are now fully operational.

While matrix powered back up at the same time as spoon and cube, it failed a filesystem check, and subsequently failed to boot into multiuser mode. As it was refusing network connections, it was not possible for admins to restore services without physical access to matrix itself.

Members of the admin team attempted to access matrix at the earliest opportunity on the evening of the 27th of June. They were unable to do so, as this was outside normal hours.

The following morning the admin team gained access to matrix, and rebooted it. Essential services which were running on matrix such as IRC and DNS have been reinstated. However, it has not been possible to mount user home directories on matrix. Our admins are currently investigating this, and we will publish updates on this as we get them.

We apologize to all who were inconvenienced by this sudden loss of service.
