Google Photon Talk tomorrow

This Thursday, 20th, we’ll be hosting a talk on Google Photon, to be given by Google employee, Laura Nolan. The talk will be held in the Maxwell Theatre at 6pm.
In 2009 a movement called DevOps began, promoting better integration between software developers and software operations. DevOps is about breaking down silos between software development and operations teams, and about using software to solve production problems. Commonly, DevOps is used to mean continuous deployment and automation of some common tasks. Google’s Site Reliability Engineering organisation consists of specialist engineers who use software engineering techniques to manage critical systems in production, and is often compared to the DevOps movement.

In 2013 Google published a paper called ‘Photon: Fault tolerant and Scalable Joining of Continuous Data Streams’. This talk will discuss the Photon system as a case study of a deep collaboration between software developers and SRE, focusing on how the basic design of the system acts to maximize reliability and to eliminate and minimize routine operational work.
Laura Nolan studied Computer Science at Trinity, graduating in 2002 (and was a Netsoc member).
She began her career at Irish firm Curam Software, which is now part of IBM Smarter Cities program.
In 2011 she moved to a performance engineering role with e-commerce flash-sale company Gilt Groupe, focusing on improving the site’s performance and reducing downtime.
Since early 2013 Laura has worked as a Site Reliability Engineer at Google.
