Welcome!

Hello one and all and welcome to Netsoc!
For those who have just joined, and those returning to us, we thank you for signing up to what is hopefully going to be an exciting year of activities! We’ve got lots of interesting talks, events, and tutorials lined up for you this term. So fire up SSH, hop onto IRC and have some ace chats while you enjoy your time in Trinity.

Talks: Intro to Netsoc

On Tuesday and Friday from 5pm we will be having an introductory session to what services we offer to all our users at Netsoc. These sessions will take place in AP0.12 in Aras An Phiarsigh (the building with the ISS Helpdesk, between the Printing House and Samuel Beckett Theatre). These will involve a quick overview of what we do by our treasurer Douglas () and then a hands-on session getting you set up on your systems. If you’re experienced with using GNU/Linux then you shouldn’t have much trouble getting onto our servers, but for those who are newcomers to that operating system, or if you just want to come down to meet some of the other members, we’d love to see you there.

LAN Party!

Netsoc, in conjucation with the DUCSS, will be hosting our annual Freshers’ Week LAN Party this Saturday from 18:00 until 9:00 on Sunday in the canteen in Trinity Halls in Dartry. This is always a fantastic event to get to know people and play some games! This is a bring your own PC event, and you should try and bring a power block too (we’ll have some, but not enough for everybody). For those who haven’t been out there Trinity have been kind enough to give a set of directions. There’s also some shops and takeaways nearby if you get peckish. We are hoping to play a variety of FPSes, RTSes, MOBAs, console games (kindly provided by DUCSS), trucking simulators or whatever takes your fancy (I’m half-joking about the trucking simulator)! Some come on down and join us in having a night full of fun!

Admin Talks

All our servers are run by our members, and we are always on the look out for people who are interested in helping us run them. Throughout the year we are going to run a series of tutorials on how to install, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot servers. Not only should this give you a fuller understanding of how multiuser, production machines work, but it means you are more prepared for the “real world”, as experience in systems administration is a really big plus on any CV. So starting next Monday (22nd September), and for each Monday after that, one of Netsoc’s system administrators or power users will be in the Netsoc room from 18:00 to go through bits and pieces of how things like webservers, mail servers, DNS, LDAP, IRC, SSH, security, and many other aspects of modern computers work. So come along if you’re interested!

That’s all for now, we’ll be sending out more emails (at least one a week) throughout the year to keep you in the loop about what exciting things we’re going to be doing! Don’t forget to look at our website, follow us on Twitter, and join us on Facebook.
