Downtime for cube and user websites

Posted by:duggles Posted on:Nov 18,2014

Cube will be turned off for a couple of hours tonight as we (finally) replace the disk that died last week. It will be turned off at about 22:00 tonigh, with the aim of it being back online at around midnight.

The reason for the prolonged downtime is because we need to prepare for our services server, snark, being turned off this weekend. This is happening because the place where we host it (Trinity Centre for High Performance Computing) is doing major work to their machine room and the network will be down for that weekend.

We are planning to run a temporary services system during this weekend, so you will still be able to log in to cube and spoon. However we will not be able to serve the user websites for that weekend. IRC, email, and logins should still be available with a small interruption on Friday morning when we transfer the services over. There will also be a small interruption on Monday afternoon once we get the all-clear from TCHPC. For the rest of next week our services server will be in an ‘at-risk’ state because of the work going on in the machine room, but we hope there will not be any further downtime.

If anybody is interested in learning about how we manage our systems, email support@netsoc.tcd.ie or come along to our sysadmin talks on each Monday in the Samuel Beckett PC Lab A in the Arts building at 6pm!
